I take it all back

Winter is never going to leave.  I feel like I am stuck in the Narnia Chronicles.  Which was it?  The first:  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  C. S. Lewis.  That one.  Nothing but nonstop winter.

Yesterday I wake up and it was 67 degrees and pouring down rain.  Judging by the buckets I left out and the overflowing water tanks (not to mention the flooding), I think we got about 4 inches.  This morning I get up and it is 29 degrees.  At least I remembered to turn the heat back on in the office and put all the hoses in the bathroom again.  Poor ponies.  They just can’t catch a break.  The weather channel warned me, so I never put away all my winter clothes, but the horses have been busy shedding theirs.  I hope no one caught a cold.

So, we finally got the spring herd evaluation done, and the vet gave me better scores than I was expecting.  Except for the feeder field, but we knew about them.  That’s why they are up wearing blankets and getting fed.  Those guys just gave up the beginning of February.  Threw in the towel.  Well, I’ll keep an eye on them over the next couple of months and see if the grass changes their mind.  The grain sure makes them happy.  A few more horses to worm and vaccinate and I will be done with the major spring hurdles.  Farm clean up begins!

And there is a lot to clean up this year.  Usually we get a warm spell in January where we can run about and get a head start on the projects, but this winter was almost a standstill.  Either single digits, raining, or snowing.  Got some inside projects and rainy day projects done (my office has never been so clean!), but wasn’t a great time to go pick up sticks.  Ron kept the fences up and serviced all the equipment, when he wasn’t busy running hay to the fields, and Roman and I did our best to keep the ponies on their feet.  And cleaned a lot of tack.  That’s all ready for riding season, if it ever arrives.

And it took $317 to get my little truck through inspection.  Ouch.  But still better than payments, so I will reluctantly hand over the cash.  So much for the tax return, eh?

You reminded me of the VA car emission inspection — we don’t have that silly EPA thing down here thank goodness. In reality there are hardly any non-conforming vehicles these days anyway & they should rescind that regulation.

So my husband says that the weather data points to more cold weather staying longer over the next 15 years, not this global warming nonsense. Don’t know what to think other than perhaps next year, not clipping.

Looking forward to pics of your new horses — when you get a decent day to do so!
